Jonjo Shelvey: "Fingers crossed" on England call-up

Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey admits that he has his "fingers crossed" over a recall to the England side.

Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has revealed that he is hopeful of earning a recall to the England squad in the near future.

The 24-year-old, who has six caps for the national side, won his first England start last September under Roy Hodgson before falling out of favour as the Magpies spiralled out of the Premier League.

With a new England manager due to be appointed next year, Shelvey thinks that his form for the Championship high-fliers under the tutelage of Rafael Benitez could impress the incoming boss.

Speaking to The Chronicle, Shelvey said: "It is going to be harder to get back into the England team. Obviously, playing in the Championship you never know whether they are looking at that league but the only thing you can do is go out on the pitch and perform week in, week out.

"Hopefully, your manager will put your name about in the press. A lot of the game is to do with the media side of things now. I feel Rafa has done that already for me now fingers crossed.

"There have been big changes with England now so you just never know what they are thinking. Fingers cross I can hopefully get back into the mix and contribute."

Shelvey has featured in all 11 of the Magpies' league games so far this season.
