Preview: Genoa vs. Venezia - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Monday's Serie A clash between Genoa and Venezia, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Genoa aim to secure three consecutive Serie A victories at the Luigi Ferraris without conceding since 2010 to compound Venezia relegation fears in Monday's gameweek 25 contest.

However, the visitors from Venice, five points from safety, are undefeated in four top-flight meetings with the Rossoblu and hope to preserve their 63-year record by avoiding a loss in Liguria.

When Patrick Vieira was appointed Genoa head coach in November 2024, the Grifone were winless on home soil in seven Serie A fixtures, albeit losing only three.

Despite playing out two more draws against Cagliari and Torino and suffering one defeat against league-chasing Napoli, the Frenchman's side have notched back-to-back wins over Parma (1-0) and Torino (2-0) without conceding.

Another triumph on Monday will see the club secure three home wins on the trot since the end of last season when the Rossoblu claimed victories over Cagliari (3-0), Sassuolo (2-1) and Bologna (2-0).

Although the 12th-placed hosts cannot move into the top half after gameweek 25, success could take Vieira's troops into 11th, leapfrogging Torino after the Bull's 3-2 loss at Europe-chasing Bologna on Friday.

To rise a spot in the standings, Genoa will have to snap a winless top-flight run against their Venice visitors, something they have failed to do since claiming a 2-0 triumph in September 1962.

The Lagunari have not lost in Serie A to Monday's hosts in 63 years, even if three of the four top-flight match-ups have ended in stalemates.

However, the Venice-based club's only success in that unbeaten spell was their most recent encounter in September, with Gianluca Busio and Joel Pohjanpalo notching the goals in a 2-0 victory.

Eusebio Di Francesco's second-bottom men seek to do the double over their opponents for the first time in Serie A, though that outcome is far from assured given the Lagunari's winless run on their travels this term.

Indeed, the Winged Lions have accrued four points from 12 matches on their travels in 2024-25, falling to eight losses away from Venice, and they could slip to their ninth road defeat in their 13th match.

Having conceded 24 times on their travels, more than every other side in the league, and scoring 10, outdoing only Lecce and Como (nine each), the travelling contingent could be forgiven for not positively approaching Monday's visit to Liguria.

Team News

Koni De Winter celebrates scoring for Genoa on January 27, 2025© Imago

Vieira's men will assess Ruslan Malinovskyi (ankle) and Maxwel Cornet (muscle) before Monday, although the Rossoblu are expected to be without Honest Ahanor (knee), Milan Badelj (muscle) and Morten Thorsby (calf).

Only Inter Milan's Romelu Lukaku (five), Torino's Che Adams (four) and Atalanta's Mateo Retegui (four) have scored more match-winning goals than Andrea Pinamonti's three, and the seven-goal man aims to add to his decisive strikes on Monday.

While he is not Rossoblu's primary source of goals, Koni De Winter has netted in consecutive league appearances against Monza and Fiorentina, and the centre-back could become the first defender to score in three straight top-flight matches since Domenico Criscito (in September 2021) and Luca Antonelli (between November and December 2014).

Venezia have fewer injury absentees, with Filip Stankovic (hamstring) and Richie Sagredo (muscle) the away side's missing players in gameweek 25; Michael Svoboda's knee problem will be checked before Monday's visit to Liguria.

With Pohjanpalo, scorer in the reverse fixture, now at Palermo, the Venice outfit will rely on Hans Nicolussi Caviglia for goals and assists, with the midfield man finding the back of the net four times and setting up two before the 25th round.

Genoa possible starting lineup:
Leali; Sabelli, Winter, Vasquez, Martin; Frendrup, Masini, Miretti; Zanoli, Pinamonti, Vitinha

Venezia possible starting lineup:
Radu; Marcandalli, Idzes, Cande; Ellertsson, Perez, Caviglia, Busio, Zerbin; Oristanio, Fila

We say: Genoa 2-1 Venezia

Although Venezia last kept a Serie A clean sheet in the reverse meeting in September, Genoa have netted a goal in five of their previous six home fixtures in Liguria.

Vieira's team are backed to record a third consecutive success at the Marassi to inflict the Lagunari's ninth away defeat this term.
