John Barnes: 'Steven Gerrard is still good enough for Liverpool'

John Barnes believes that Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is still "good enough" to play for the Merseyside club.

John Barnes believes that Steven Gerrard is still "good enough" to play for Liverpool.

The midfielder's Anfield future is currently in doubt as he is yet to sign a new contract at the club.

The 34-year-old, who comes to the end of his current terms in the summer, is also believed to be considering retirement.

"At this stage of his career, his best at this moment in time is still good enough for Liverpool," Barnes told BBC Radio 5 live.

"While I can understand Steven Gerrard is not the player he once was, he is still very, very important to Liverpool Football Club.

"Maybe not every week, which is what Brendan Rodgers is choosing to do, but it's a question of whether or not Steven understands that."

Gerrard has played for Liverpool for his entire career to date.
