Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has hailed first-team doctor Zaf Iqbal for saving his career.
Gerrard's praise comes after Iqbal received a nomination for next week's Asian Football Awards.
The awards, which recognise the outstanding contribution of individuals with a South Asian heritage, were launched in 2012.
Iqbal was recognised for his contribution to medicine at the inaugural ceremony, and Gerrard believes that the Pakistan-born doctor's good work deserves to be acknowledged again.
Gerrard told reporters: "I've had serious injuries of late and without the doc I'd have been in big trouble."
Speaking to BBC Asian Network, the England midfielder added: "In his spare time, I think Zaf is always pushing for kids to stay healthy and get involved in sport. Credit to him."
Iqbal qualified as a doctor in London in 1999. He joined Liverpool in 2010 following spells with Leyton Orient, England and Tottenham Hotspur.
