Reina: 'Suarez has been unfairly crucified'

Pepe Reina thinks that Luis Suarez is "100% not a racist" following the Liverpool striker's eight-match ban handed down by the FA.

Liverpool goalkeeper believes that "lovely" Luis Suarez has been unfairly treated following the outcome of the racism probe involving Manchester United defender Patrice Evra.

The Uruguayan striker was hit with an eight-match ban after the Football Association's Independent Commission ruled the 24-year-old guilty of racially abusing Evra.

The Merseyside club have strongly refuted the outcome and the players joined together to release a statement professing their full support of the striker.

"We are all right behind him," said Reina. "He has our full support. We made a statement earlier and we said what we thought was the truth.

"We were together from the very first minute [of the allegations] and it is the minimum we can do for him. He is not racist. I am 100% he is not racist and he has been accused of racism.

"We showed our support to Luis. We want him and everyone to know we are right behind our teammate because he is a lovely guy and he has been crucified by some people and it is not fair. Eight games is not even close to be fair."

The players, as well as manager Kenny Dalglish, displayed their support of Suarez by wearing t-shirts emblazoned with a picture of the striker on the front and his name and shirt number on the back before their 0-0 draw with Wigan Athletic last night.
