Luis Suarez has been found guilty by the Football Association of racially abusing Patrice Evra.
The Uruguayan has been handed an eight-match ban and ordered to pay a £40,000 fine by English football's governing body.
Upon hearing the decision, Suarez wrote on his Twitter account: "Today is a very difficult and painful day for both me and my family. Thanks for all the support, I'll keep working!"
The FA hearing took place from December 14 to December 20 before an Independent Regulatory Commission reached its decision.
The charge relates to a complaint from Frenchman Evra of verbal abuse during Liverpool's game against Manchester United.
The 24-year-old has been given two weeks to appeal the decision.
He also faces a charge of improper conduct for a hand gesture made towards Fulham fans on December 5.
