Liverpool 'to open contract talks with Steven Gerrard this week'

Steven Gerrard will reportedly hold talks with Liverpool this week over a new contract.

Liverpool will reportedly open formal contract talks with Steven Gerrard this week.

Reds chief executive Ian Ayre is meeting with the midfielder's representative Struan Marshall to discuss extending his existing deal beyond the end of the season, according to The Express.

The 34-year-old intends to continue playing beyond the current campaign, and Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers is hoping to keep him at his boyhood club.

Gerrard is said to have attracted interest from Major League Soccer clubs and teams based in the Middle East, as well as several of Liverpool's Premier League rivals.

Liverpool are also said to have opened contract negotiations with England duo Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling, with these talks yet to reach their conclusion.
