Pardew: 'Liverpool need to take Carroll loss'

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew believes that Liverpool need to be prepared to take a big loss on Andy Carroll.

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has expressed his belief that Liverpool will need to be prepared to take a substantial loss on Andy Carroll if they want to sell the striker.

Carroll's future has been in doubt since the arrival of new manager Brendan Rodgers, alerting the likes of Newcastle to his potential availability.

However, Rodgers has ruled out the possibility of a loan move for the 23-year-old and is thought to be holding out for at least £20m for any permanent move.

Pardew believes that any deal for the striker would have to be for a lot less than the £35m Liverpool paid for him last January.

"[Reading chairman] John Madejski used to say to me about certain players, 'Just wipe your nose and move on', and I think [Liverpool] are going to have to do that with Andy. I think it was obvious as soon as Brendan went into Liverpool that Andy's time was going to have to be somewhere else. I think it's quite right we're involved in that," said Pardew.

"Whether he comes here, is something that I will take or I will leave. It's a lot of money for Mike [Ashley, Newcastle owner], although we'll obviously be getting a big upside in terms of what we sold him for, and we've got three great strikers here already.

"But of course as the manager, I want the best players I can get."

Carroll has scored just 11 times in 56 appearances for Liverpool since joining, compared to 33 goals in 91 appearances for Newcastle.
