Wednesday's Manchester United transfer talk news roundup: Donny van de Beek, Chris Smalling, Dayot Upamecano

Sports Mole rounds up the latest transfer talk for Manchester United on Wednesday, September 2.

The summer transfer window has now begun, with rumours and speculation continuing to swirl as Manchester United eye possible reinforcements.

The Red Devils brought in Bruno Fernandes and Odion Ighalo in the final days of the winter window but are still expected to be active in the summer as they aim to restore their former glories.

Here, Sports Mole rounds up the latest news on possible comings and goings from Old Trafford.

Wednesday morning's Manchester United transfer talk news roundup:

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 'demands three more signings after Donny van de Beek'

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reportedly determined to further strengthen Manchester United's squad with three more signings once a deal for Donny van de Beek is concluded.

The Red Devils are expected to confirm the arrival of Ajax ace Van de Beek in the coming days in a transfer worth around £40m.

After bolstering his midfield options, The Times claims that Solskjaer will then turn focus to bringing in players in three other troublesome positions.

A new centre-back is said to have been targeted before the transfer window shuts on October 5, as well as a right winger and a striker.

However, United will first have to move on some first-team players, with Jesse Lingard and Andreas Pereira being linked with the Old Trafford exit in recent weeks.

Borussia Dortmund attacker Jadon Sancho is widely considered to be Solskjaer's primary target, but the Bundesliga club are refusing to budge on their £108m valuation.

Manchester United 'hoping to use Chris Smalling funds on Dayot Upamecano'

Manchester United are reportedly expecting Roma to return with a fresh bid for Chris Smalling and plan to use the funds raised from that sale on signing Dayot Upamecano.

Smalling spent the 2019-20 campaign on loan at Roma, impressing enough for the Italian outfit to attempt to make the deal permanent.

However, United rejected a £13m bid in November and Smalling has now returned to his parent club after Roma failed to meet the Red Devils' asking price for the 30-year-old.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claims that United are expecting another offer from Roma in the coming days, with the player himself also keen to return to the Stadio Olimpico.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side will then reportedly put the funds generated towards buying RB Leipzig defender Upamecano, who has been identified as their top target to partner Harry Maguire at the heart of the defence.

United are expected to announce the arrival of their first summer signing Donny van de Beek imminently and will then turn their attention to bringing in Upamecano.
