Rio Ferdinand says that the word "retirement" is "not welcome" on Twitter following Sir Alex Ferguson's decision to step down as Manchester United boss.

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has told his Twitter followers to refrain from using the word "retirement" on the social network site.

The message comes after United boss Sir Alex Ferguson announced that he intends to retire when the season comes to a close following a glittering 26-year career at Old Trafford.

Following his decision, the North-West outfit confirmed that the 71-year-old will remain within the club as a director and ambassador.

Ferdinand wrote on Twitter: "Do not mention the word retirement on my timeline please people.....that word is not welcome here!"

Meanwhile, widespread reports have claimed that Everton manager David Moyes is poised to become Ferguson's successor this week.
