Paul Scholes: Manchester United squad looks "unbalanced"

Ex-Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes claims that the squad looks "unbalanced" and too loaded with attacking options.

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has admitted that the squad looks "unbalanced".

New manager Louis van Gaal has previously lamented his lack of options in the defensive areas following the departures of Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic.

Scholes agrees that there are too many attacking midfielders and not enough defensive-minded players at Old Trafford.

He told Sky Sports News: "[Van Gaal] said it himself and the squad looks unbalanced to me. They have a number of number 10s, with Juan Mata, Shinji Kagawa and Adnan Januzaj, and Ander Herrera looks more like a number 10 than a central midfield player.

"Tom Cleverley you could argue is a number 10 as well, so there is a lot of them type of players but they are struggling a little bit for defenders.

"Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans are the only recognised defenders. He said he likes Michael Keane and Tyler Blackett who are up and coming, but his priority will be defenders."

United beat Inter Milan 5-3 on penalties in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday.
