Manchester United and Roma are still reportedly £5.5m apart in their valuations of central defender Chris Smalling.

Manchester United and Roma are still reportedly €6m (£5.5m) apart as they struggle to come to an agreement over a deal for English defender Chris Smalling.

The 30-year-old joined Roma on loan last summer and has been in impressive form for the Italian giants during the 2019-20 campaign, making 28 appearances in all competitions.

As it stands, Smalling is due to return to Old Trafford at the end of the season, but Roma have said on a number of occasions that they are keen on a permanent deal.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, United want €23m (£21m) for the England international, but the Serie A club have thus far only offered a loan with an obligation to buy next summer for €17m (£15.5m).

As a result, there is currently a €6m (£5.5m) difference between the two clubs, meaning that the defender's future is up in the air ahead of the 2020-21 campaign.

The former Fulham youngster has made 323 appearances for United in all competitions, winning two Premier League titles, one FA Cup, one EFL Cup and the Europa League during his time at the club.
