Louis van Gaal open to extending contract at Manchester United

Louis van Gaal suggests that he would consider signing a new contract at Manchester United when his current deal expires in 2017.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has suggested that he would consider extending his contract at Old Trafford beyond 2017.

The Dutchman signed a three-year deal when he replaced David Moyes last year, but ahead of his 64th birthday next month, Van Gaal has admitted that while he would consider staying, he would also "happily" walk away from football.

The former Netherlands coach also claimed that he expects to be sacked by United anyway if he fails to guide the team to the Premier League title in the next two years.

When asked by reporters if he would take a new deal should it be offered, Van Gaal said: "You never know. You can never say 'I go.' I have already said to my wife it might be that we extend in Manchester. But normally I have said to my wife that at 55 years I quit, and I'm still in the business and in two weeks' time I will be 64.

"I can walk away from [management]. I have already taken two sabbaticals. They were not for a year on either occasion, but it was very, very nice.

"And it was not cats and dogs with my wife. And I have a paradise in Portugal. So I can happily walk away from football and do other things. I know I can do that."

Van Gaal has brought five new players into the club so far this summer - Memphis Depay, Matteo Darmian, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin and goalkeeper Sergio Romero.
