Edinson Cavani hints at Napoli return

Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani suggests that he wants to return to Napoli while he is "still playing at a high level".

Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani has suggested that he could return to Napoli at some point in the future.

The 30-year-old left the Italian outfit for Paris in 2013 and enjoyed the best campaign of his career in the season just finished, scoring 49 goals across all competitions.

Cavani was back in Naples for the Football Leader Awards earlier this week, and in an open letter to fans he confirmed that the club is still close to his heart.

"Emotions. The plane was landing. From high up I could see Naples, my Naples, getting closer. In a handful of seconds, I re-experienced unique emotions. On the stage I was not able to express everything that I was feeling, the gratitude towards all of you who welcomed me with extraordinary warmth and affection," he wrote.

"Emotions, in receiving this recognition from Italian football. Emotions, after realising that the people understood my professional decision and welcomed me without rancour, as if time had stopped and nothing had changed.

"Emotions, in seeing in the eyes of the Neapolitans that light called hope and that fires up the dreams of victory, where here they breathe football and live for the team. Emotions, and goosebumps watching all my goals go by and the images of such success experienced together. Thank you Napoli, we will meet again..."

Cavani is also quoted as saying by ESPN: "When I left, I said that if things changed a bit, I would like to come back to Napoli, but I want to come back here while I am still playing at a high level. I don't want to come back to Napoli when my footballing days are ending – it's going to be me who decides when I retire, so when I come back, I will still be in form."

The Uruguay international scored 104 goals in 138 goals during three seasons in Naples.
