Newcastle United are reportedly still pursuing Leicester City midfielder James Maddison, with a move in January believed to be a possibility.

Newcastle United could reportedly make further attempts to sign James Maddison from Leicester City.

The Magpies saw two bids rejected for Maddison in the summer transfer window, including a £50m offer that fell £10m below of Leicester's asking price.

Despite failing in their pursuit to sign the midfielder in the summer, according to The Athletic journalist Chris Waugh, Newcastle are still interested in bringing Maddison to St. James' Park in January.

As per the Leicester Mercury, Waugh said: "Newcastle's recruitment team have already turned their attentions towards the mid-season window and Leicester's Maddison is a player they retain an interest in.

"The 25-year-old will only have 18 months left on his contract, although Leicester have an option to extend his stay at the King Power Stadium, and his versatility makes him an attractive prospect, as does his creativity and eye for goal."

However, Waugh's colleague George Caulkin questioned whether Leicester would be prepared to sell another key player so soon after allowing Wesley Fofana to join Chelsea.

Caulkin said: "On Maddison, I'd also point out that - shock horror - he began contract talks with Leicester last month, although there has been no resolution yet.

"There is obviously a lot of flux there, which is something to keep an eye on, but they did sell Wesley Fofana to Chelsea for £69.5m.

"Would Leicester sanction another big-money departure so soon, particularly when they are struggling?"

Maddison has scored three goals and provided one assist in six league games this season despite Leicester sitting bottom of the Premier League table with one point to their name.
