Preview: Plymouth Argyle vs. Sheffield Wednesday - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's League One clash between Plymouth Argyle and Sheffield Wednesday, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Two of the top three teams in League One face off on Tuesday night when leaders Plymouth Argyle welcome fellow high fliers Sheffield Wednesday to Home Park.

Just two points separate the two sides in the table after 11 games, meaning that victory for Wednesday would see them leapfrog Plymouth at the top of the pile.

Plymouth have won every single home game in the league this season, which can only be made an even more impressive stat by the fact that they have only conceded one goal in those five home games.

Goalkeeper Michael Cooper, with the help of the defensive unit in front of him, has kept six clean sheets this season so far, which is the joint-most in the league and includes their last league game against Wycombe Wanderers.

After picking up a 2-1 victory against second-placed Ipswich Town in their last midweek fixture, Plymouth will be looking to assert their dominance at the top of the table with another win against a rival in the early race for the automatic promotion places and the title.

Steven Schumacher will be pleased with his side's start to the season after they just missed out on the playoffs last season, and will hope they can continue the momentum they have built up, unbeaten in their last seven league games.

After losing to Sunderland in the playoffs last season, Sheffield Wednesday have made an impressive start to this season, and are potentially one of the best-placed teams to be promoted this year after their heartbreak at the end of the last campaign.

Darren Moore's side have been in great form away from home this season, winning four out of five games and keeping clean sheets in all those wins, which includes their last game against Port Vale.

A key player in the offensive success for Wednesday this season has been Josh Windass, contributing four goals and three assists in his 10 starts in the campaign so far, better than his goal contributions from last season already.

Sheffield Wednesday could go top with a victory if the Ipswich result also goes their way, which would be their second good result against teams around them after they picked up a point in a 2-2 draw against Ipswich a couple of weeks ago.

Team News

Sheffield Wednesday manager Darren Moore on February 13, 2022© Reuters

After 10 consecutive starts, captain Joe Edwards was on the bench for Plymouth's previous fixture but is expected to come back into the team for this crucial game early in the season.

They will also be expected to switch back to a three-at-the-back formation which they have played in every game this season, apart from their last fixture against Wycombe Wanderers.

Sheffield Wednesday have had a very settled side in their last couple of fixtures, with changes only being made in the front line with Mallik Wilks and Lee Gregory rotating.

Both have struggled to find the net this season, so rotation to try and get one of them firing is expected, with Gregory scoring the only goal between them so far this campaign.

Plymouth Argyle possible starting lineup:
Cooper; Wilson, Scarr, Lonwijk; Edwards, Butcher, Randell, Mumba; Mayor, Ennis, Whittaker

Sheffield Wednesday possible starting lineup:
Stockdale; James, Heneghan, Ihiekwe; Johnson, Bannan, Vaulks, Palmer; Windass, Gregory, Smith

We say: Plymouth Argyle 1-1 Sheffield Wednesday

With both sides being strong in defence and having good records at home and away from home respectively, this will likely be a tight affair and it will be hard to separate the two teams.
