Marseille held by Rennes

Romain Alessandrini's late goal for Rennes denies Marseille an away win as they are held to a 2-2 draw away from home.

Marseille have failed to close the gap on Ligue 1 leaders Lyon as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Rennes away from home.

The result sees Elie Baup's side join Paris Saint-Germain on 42 points in the standings, three points off the pace for the moment.

The start of the match saw Rennes put the Marseille defence under pressure, but it was the visitors who made the breakthrough in the 38th minute.

Mathieu Valbuena released Andre Ayew with a through-ball for him to shoot home from close range.

Rennes made it 1-1 on the hour mark through Kevin Theophile-Catherine, who headed home Romain Alessandrini's corner to the top-right corner.

Marseille thought that they had bagged maximum points in the 83rd minute when Jordan Ayew turned in Morgan Amalfitano's cross from just yards out.

However, there was more drama to come in Rennes, as Alessandrini rescued a point for the hosts with just two minutes of normal time remaining with a close-range header.
