Francesco Totti scored both goals for the home side as Roma were held to a 2-2 draw at the Stadio Olimpico this evening.
The home side won a penalty in the ninth minute when Fabio Borini was felled by Juan Pablo Carrizo. The usually-reliable Totti stepped up but saw his effort from 12 yards saved by Carrizo.
Totti, who was making his 500th Serie A appearance, made up for his penalty miss eight minutes into the second half by tucking home Fernando Gago's pass from just outside the area.
Roma didn't lead for long, however, as, five minutes later, Gabriel Heinze brought down Pablo Barrientos in the box. This time the penalty was scored as Francesco Lodi found the bottom left corner to equalise.
Catania then took the lead midway through the second period when Giovanni Marchese found enough space to prod home following a Lodi set piece.
Totti levelled proceedings by finding the net from Miralem Pjanic's pass before Roma went in search of a late winner.
They were unable to find one and had to settle for a point that dents their hopes of finishing in a European spot.
