Sheffield United striker Ched Evans is "shocked" at being served with a five-year prison sentence after he was found guilty of raping a woman.
The 23-year-old was handed the verdict at Caernarfon Crown Court today for having sex with a 19-year-old woman who was "too drunk to consent" to intercourse last summer.
A statement from the player's legal representation was released via the club's official website, saying: "Ched Evans is shocked and extremely disappointed with the decision reached today by the jury at Caernarfon Crown Court to convict him of the charge brought against him.
"Mr Evans firmly maintains his innocence in this matter and is being advised regarding an appeal of the decision."
The League One outfit have claimed that they will take "time to consider" their position in regards to Evans's status at the club.
