Adam Lallana scores both goals for Southampton as they resume top spot in the Championship with a win over Barnsley.

Southampton have maintained their position at the top of the Championship after seeing off Barnsley at St Mary's this afternoon.

Adam Lallana scored both goals for the home side either side of the interval to give the Saints victory.

Tadanari Lee had the first real chance of the game 20 minutes in but he headed over from Rickie Lambert's chipped pass.

Lambert did provide the first goal nine minutes before the break by heading down for the onrushing Adam Lallana to fire home from six yards.

Lallana doubled his and the Saints' total in the 54th minute by converting Lee's cutback after a good run to the byline.

Barnsley, who rarely threatened, did come close to pulling a goal back late on but hit the post after a goalmouth scramble.

The win for the Saints extends their lead at the top to three points because of West Ham's draw with Doncaster, while Barnsley remain 17th despite the loss.
