Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that defender Danny Rose has undergone surgery on his knee which could see him miss the start of next season.
The 26-year-old has been sidelined since the end of January with the problem, but recently returned to training and was thought to be on the verge of his comeback to first-team action.
However, the England international has since suffered a setback in his recovery and will now spend the summer recuperating from "exploratory surgery".
"We can confirm that Danny Rose has undergone exploratory surgery on his left knee today," read a statement from the club.
"He recently returned to training, however the problem has not resolved fully therefore a decision has been made to proceed to surgery. He will now return to action next season."
Rose made 18 Premier League appearances this season before sustaining the injury.
