Midfielder Clint Dempsey insists that he did not expect to leave Tottenham Hotspur for a move to the MLS this summer.

Midfielder Clint Dempsey has insisted that it was purely "timing" that saw him leave Tottenham Hotspur for Seattle Sounders.

Dempsey completed the surprise move back to his homeland earlier this month, and the former Fulham man has admitted that he wanted to return to America while he could still "make an impact".

The 30-year-old told Sky Sports News: "I had two years left on my contract at Tottenham and going back there in pre-season, I thought I was going to be there but I guess it is just timing.

"The right situation came along and MLS and Seattle Sounders, they moved mountains to get me back and I wanted to come back whilst I could still do it. I wanted to come back and make an impact."

Dempsey scored 12 goals in 43 appearances during his one season with Spurs.
