James McClean hopeful of making Euro 2012

James McClean admits that he hopes to make the Republic of Ireland squad for Euro 2012 after making his debut in Wednesday's 1-1 draw with the Czech Republic.

James McClean has admitted that he hopes to be named in the Republic of Ireland squad for Euro 2012 after he made his debut in Wednesday's 1-1 draw with the Czech Republic.

The Sunderland striker made his international bow as a second-half substitute for Aiden McGeady during the game in Dublin.

Asked if he thought that he could make the final squad, the 22-year-old said: "Obviously, I am not going to lie. I really hope it could happen but the only way that's going to happen is if I'm playing well with Sunderland week in, week out.

"And then it's up to the manager, Giovanni [Trapattoni], so you never know, we'll see."

McClean is expected to feature for the Black Cats in Sunday's derby against Newcastle United at the Sports Direct Arena.
