Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has reportedly identified Stoke City defender Geoff Cameron as a possible target in the latter stages of the transfer window.
Cameron has made 15 appearances for the Potters in the Premier League this season, but Poyet is understood to see the American as the ideal person to improve his defence in the fight against relegation.
According to BBC Sport, the Black Cats boss is hopeful of agreeing a deal on transfer deadline day, but the club have failed to make progress.
Cameron still has 18 months remaining on his contract at the Britannia Stadium, and Sunderland are likely to wait until the summer to make another move.
