Mick McCarthy slams "outrageous" Wolverhampton Wanderers spending

Former Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Mick McCarthy believes that the Molineux side's high-spending transfer activity this summer has been "outrageous".

Former Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Mick McCarthy has described the Molineux side's high-spending transfer activity this summer as "outrageous".

Last season, the Black Country outfit spent just over £30m on players, including a £12.75m fee for winger Helder Costa from Benfica.

This summer, Wolves have once again opted to commit high sums of money to strengthening their squad, with Ruben Neves joining from Porto for £15.2m.

McCarthy, now managing Championship rivals Ipswich Town, told the Birmingham Mail: "Wolves spent £15m on a holding midfield player for heaven's sake - they already have a £13m winger.

"I am not complaining but I just don't know how it can be sustained. I think it is outrageous, but don't get me wrong - if I had it, I would spend it."

Wolves have been under the ownership of Chinese company Fosun for the last year and have close links with Portuguese agent Jorge Mendes.
