Preview: Wycombe Wanderers vs. Cambridge United - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's League One clash between Wycombe Wanderers and Cambridge United, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Wycombe Wanderers will attempt to end a three-game winless run when they welcome Cambridge United to Adams Park on Tuesday.

The visitors, meanwhile, will have the chance to claim a second straight victory after beating Carlisle United at the weekend.

Having collected 21 points from their 14 league games, Wycombe currently occupy 10th place in the League One table, with five points separating them from the top six.

Although they will have the chance to close that gap on Tuesday, the Chairboys head into the midweek encounter during a poor spell of form, having won just one of their five league games in October.

Since beating Fleetwood Town 4-1 on October 7, Matt Bloomfield's side have gone on to pick up two points from their next three matches.

After drawing 2-2 with Peterborough United and losing 4-2 to Bolton Wanderers, Wycombe looked set to beat Oxford United on Saturday when Luke Leahy scored two spot kicks to give his side a 2-1 lead at the Kassam Stadium, but a Cameron Brannagan penalty in the sixth minute of stoppage time ultimately denied the Chairboys all three points.

Having conceded eight times in the last three games, Wycombe have now let in 23 league goals this season, leaving them with the third-worst defensive record in the division, which highlights a key area for improvement if they are to move closer to the playoffs.

As for Cambridge, they will head into Tuesday's contest in a positive mood after beating Carlisle on Saturday to claim their first win since September 4.

Substitute George Thomas scored the decisive goal to guide the U's to a precious 1-0 victory, bringing an end to a 10-game winless run in all competitions.

As a result of their fourth league victory of the campaign, Mark Bonner's side moved up to 14th place and four points clear of the relegation zone.

Cambridge will now turn their attention to the midweek trip to Adams Park, where they will be hoping to improve upon their recent away form, having failed to win any of their last six competitive matches on the road.

Although they have won just one away game this season, Cambridge can draw inspiration from the 3-2 victory that they recorded in last season's away meeting with Wycombe.

Wycombe's injury list features Jason McCarthy, Kane Vincent-Young, Jack Grimmer, Joe Jacobson, and Christie Ward.

Having missed the last two matches with an injury issue, Chris Forino-Joseph remains a doubt for Tuesday's contest.

Midfielder Josh Scowen is set to return to the starting lineup after missing the draw with Oxford through suspension.

Cambridge, meanwhile, are still unable to call upon the services of defender Harrison Dunk and forward Elias Kachunga.

After coming off the bench to score the winner on Saturday, Thomas could be rewarded with a starting berth for the midweek away trip.

Fejiri Okenabirhie, who has scored five league goals this season, has settled for a place among the substitutes for the last two matches, but he is in contention to feature in the forward line against Wycombe.

Wycombe Wanderers possible starting lineup:
Stryjek; Keogh, Low, Leahy; Pattenden, Scowen, Potts, Boyes; Phillips, Taylor, Hanlan

Cambridge United possible starting lineup:
Stevens; L. Bennett, R. Bennett, Morrison, Andrew; Thomas, Cousins, Digby; Brophy, Kaikai, Okenabirhie

We say: Wycombe Wanderers 2-1 Cambridge United

Although Cambridge picked up all three points on their previous trip to Adams Park, we think that they will leave empty-handed this time around, having lost five of their last six competitive away matches since beating Fleetwood Town in August.
