Pastor Maldonado: 'Mercedes engines helping Lotus'

Pastor Maldonado claims that Lotus's switch to Mercedes engines has helped the team improve during the winter.

Pastor Maldonado has suggested that Lotus are benefitting from the shift to Mercedes engines for 2015.

The Enstone-based outfit struggled using the much-criticised Renault power unit last season, but agreed a switch to the German supplier for this campaign.

Maldonado believes that the change of engine is helping Lotus move closer to the front of the Formula 1 grid again.

"The engine is not complicated, it is easier but you still need to adapt yourself," Maldonado is quoted by Crash.net as saying. "I've felt no pressure to adapt, because it is easier to adapt with more power. Compared to Renault there is obviously more power but it is not about the amount but more about how it delivers the power.

"When you are more confident in the car you can push harder," he explained. "The car feels more compact with a very good balance and still something we can work around. It has been easier to get more mileage and therefore try more aerodynamic things which is very positive."

The 2015 season gets underway at the Australian Grand Prix on March 15.
