Result: Jenson Button wins in Japan, Sebastian Vettel retains title

Sebastian Vettel retains his world title in Japan, after in third place behind winner Jenson Button.

World Champion Sebastian Vettel has retained his title in Japan, despite finishing in third place behind winner Jenson Button.

Vettel, who required just one point to secure his title, finished on 324 points – a clear 114 points above second-place Button – to become the youngest ever double champion in Formula 1.

The 24-year-old led in the early stages, but Button's tyre-management from start to finish allowed him to take pole position in the later laps.

Ferrari's Fernando Alonso took the second spot on the podium, finishing one place ahead of the German, to remain in the hunt for second overall. The Spaniard is eight points behind Button.

Mark Webber finished one place behind his Red Bull teammate in fourth, while Lewis Hamilton endured a difficult race and finished in fifth.
