Lee Westwood moves into contention at the Open Championship, despite dropping three shots over his final six holes.

Lee Westwood has moved into contention at the British Open after carding a second-round 68 at Muirfield.

The 40-year-old opened up his round in superb fashion, securing birdies on the first two holes before a third on the fifth took him to two-under-par.

The Englishman was in full flow and he ended the front nine with two more birdies to reach the turn in 31.

A sixth birdie followed on the 12th hole, but the world number 12 suffered a double blow in dropping two shots in successive holes.

A fine par-saving putt on the penultimate hole kept him at three-under, but his putt at the last stayed up to see Westwood end his round on two-under-par and three off the lead.
