Emotional Jason Day relieved to end Major hunt after US PGA Championship win

Jason Day expresses his relief at finally winning a Major after posting a 20-under-par score to win the US PGA Championship.

An emotional Jason Day has revealed his delight at finally winning a Major title after clinching the US PGA Championship at Whistling Straits.

The 27-year-old posted a final-round 67 to edge out pre-tournament favourite Jordan Spieth by three shots and end his hoodoo on the big stage.

Day, who previously managed six top-four finishes in the Majors, posted a winning score of 20-under-par - the best total by anybody throughout the history of golf's four most prestigious competitions.

"I didn't expect I was going to cry," he told reporters. "A lot of emotion has come out just because I've been close so many times and fallen short.

"To be able to play the way I did today in tough conditions with Jordan in the group - he was the favourite - to be able to play the way I did was amazing.

"Overall I'm just really pleased with how I played. I couldn't ask for anything better."

England's Justin Rose finished fourth on 14-under, one stroke behind South African Branden Grace in third.
