The Swede shot a five-under-par third round of 67 to reach 17-under overall and nudge one shot ahead of France's Victor Dubuisson, who hit 11 birdies in his round of 64.

Stenson, who is set to add the Race to Dubai to his FedEx Cup success on America's PGA Tour, birdied holes five and seven on the front nine before one-over through the next six.

He recovered by birdieing four of the last five holes to retain his lead in both the tournament at Jumeirah Golf Estates and the Race to Dubai standings.

His nearest competitor in the latter is Justin Rose, who begins the final round six shots adrift after a third-round 68.
