The USA beat Russia on penalty shots in their Group A preliminary round men's ice hockey game at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

The USA beat Russia on penalty shots in their Group A preliminary round men's ice hockey game at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, after it was tied at 2-2 at the end of overtime.

The first period ended goalless despite significant pressure from the hosts.

The USA managed to survive two Russian powerplays, but early in the second period, the home team's captain Pavel Datsyuk drove through the heart of the USA defence and sent a shot into the goal via the far post to give them a lead.

The Americans responded less than 10 minutes later, though, when Cameron Fowler bundled the puck home with the outside of his left blade.

The USA defended stoutly once more during a third Russian powerplay and went ahead with just 10 minutes remaining through Joe Pavelski after a good pass by Patrick Kane.

With seven minutes remaining, the Russians drew level as Datsyuk got his name on the scoresheet for the second time.

With just a few minutes remaining, Fyodor Tyutin thought that he had given Russia victory with a fierce strike from distance, but the referee disallowed the goal.

In the first minute of overtime, Kane wasted a good opportunity to put USA in the lead once more when he sent a low shot straight at Sergei Bobrovski from close range.

In the shootout, TJ Oshie gave the North American side an early lead before Yevgeni Malkin missed for Russia. Both teams then squandered their next shots before the Russian Federation drew level after three penalty shots apiece.

Oshie then failed to convert his shot and Patsyuk smartly finished to put the Russians ahead for the first time in the shootout. However, the 27-year-old made amends for his previous miss to pull his side level again.

After Russia had missed their seventh attempt, Oshi was trusted once more, and the right wing slammed the puck home to give USA a dramatic victory.
