Doriano Romboni dies after crashing in a Supermoto event held in honour of the late Marco Simoncelli.

Former grand prix motorcycle racer Doriano Romboni has been killed in a Supermoto accident in his native Italy.

The 44-year-old was struck by another racer after crashing at the Latina circuit and later died of his injuries at the Santa Maria Goretti hospital.

He was taking part in the 'Sic Supermoto Day' event, held in honour of the late Marco Simoncelli, whose life was cut short in October 2011 after a collision during the Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang.

Romboni competed in grand prix motorcycle racing from 1989 to 1998, before spending the 1999, 2000 and 2004 seasons in the Superbike World Championship.
