Austrian team receive kidnap threat ahead of Sochi Winter Olympics

The Austrian Olympic Committee confirm that they have received a letter containing a kidnap threat against two of their athletes.

Austrian Olympic Committee general secretary Peter Mennel has confirmed that the team received a kidnap threat against two of their athletes ahead of the Sochi Winter Olympics 2014.

A threat against Alpine skier Marlies Schild and skeleton pilot Janine Flock was reportedly contained in an anonymous letter sent from Russia to the AOC's Vienna office.

"The letter was delivered into our mailbox," The Guardian quotes Mennel as saying.

"We have immediately alerted the Federal Criminal Agency, which is investigating the case."

Mennel has also revealed that the athletes will be protected by special counter-terrorism unit Cobra when they step out of the Olympic village.
