Vladimir Putin: 'Echoes of Cold War theories'

Vladimir Putin claims that Cold War theories of containment aimed at restraining the development of the former Soviet Union have been echoed at the Sochi Games.

Russian President Vladimir Putin believes that criticism of the country's Winter Olympics is reminiscent of Cold War theories aimed to hold the former Soviet Union back.

The build-up to the Games was overshadowed by reports surrounding threats of Islamist militant violence, anti-gay propaganda laws and allegations of widespread corruption.

"Back in Cold War times, the theory of containment was created," Putin is quoted as saying by Reuters.

"This theory and its practice were aimed at restraining the development of the Soviet Union.

"What we see now are echoes of this containment theory. This, unfortunately, has also been applied to the Olympic project."

Day three of Sochi 2014 ended with Canada topping the medal chart
