Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher unveiled a new playground at Sir Thomas Gray Primary School in Bootle.
The 35-year-old, who grew up in the Merseyside town, officially opened the "outdoor classroom", which was largely funded by the nearby O2 store.
"It is great for the children, particularly with Jamie coming down to open it, just to give them something to make them smile," year six teacher Joseph Giblin told the Liverpool Echo. "We are really grateful."
Meanwhile, Carragher will hang up his boots from professional football at the end of the season.
