Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney says that his sister-in-law Rosie is an "inspiration" to him following her death on Saturday.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has written a heartfelt message to his sister-in-law Rosie McLoughlin, who died on Saturday at the age of 14.

The England international has been grieving with his wife Coleen, who is the sister of adopted Rosie, following the teenager's death from a rare genetic brain disorder called Rett Syndrome.

In the Liverpool Echo newspaper, Rooney wrote: "My angel Rosie, I will miss you so much. I will never forget the way you laughed and those big beautiful eyes. You are an inspiration to me.

"God has called for you, so we have to let you go, so take your eyes and that big smile and make Heaven glow. You will always have a special place in my heart. Love you always and forever. - Your Wayne."

Reports have claimed that Rooney wants to wear a T-shirt to pay tribute to Rosie's memory when he returns to the pitch from a knee injury for United.
