Alexis Sanchez accepts suspended jail sentence for tax fraud

Manchester United forward Alexis Sanchez accepts a 16-month suspended jail sentence for tax fraud to avoid going on trial in Spain.

Manchester United forward Alexis Sanchez has been handed a 16-month suspended jail sentence for tax fraud relating to his time at Barcelona.

The Chile international accepted the punishment to avoid a trial hearing in Spain over the unpaid taxes, amounting to around £886,000.

Sanchez, who recently left Arsenal to join Man United in a high-profile transfer, was accused of dodging tax laws on image rights in 2012 and 2013.

United are understood to be paying the 29-year-old £14m a year after tax, making him the highest-paid player in Premier League history.

A number of other high-profile players in La Liga have received similar punishments in recent years, including both Cristiano Ronaldo and Sanchez's former Barca teammate Lionel Messi.
