Turkish FA fires 94 officials following failed coup

The Turkish Football Federation announces that 94 officials linked to July's failed government coup, including one Super Lig referee, have been relived of their duties.

A total of 94 officials have been fired by the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) following last month's unsuccessful attempt to remove president Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The fallout from the July 15 backlash is still being felt across Turkey, although football matches have been given the green light to be played as scheduled.

However, a referee from the Super Lig is said to be among those relieved of his duties in the aftermath of the failed coup, in which the government resumed power less than 24 hours later.

"Our federation deemed it necessary to dismiss 94 people, including regional and nationally-ranked referees and assistant referees, regional refereeing committee members and national and regional observers," the TFF said in a statement.

Atletico Madrid had been due to visit Turkey to face Galatasaray in a pre-season friendly next weekend, but postponed the match due to safety concerns.
