Russia's deputy prime minister plays down Sochi security fears

Russia's deputy prime minister Dmitry Kozak insists that Sochi is safe and secure for everyone attending the Winter Olympics.

Russia's deputy prime minister Dmitry Kozak has insisted that athletes, media personnel and fans coming to Sochi for the 2014 Winter Olympics should not have any fear about their safety.

The United States government recently issued a warning to all flights to Russia that explosives could be hidden in toothpaste tubes and smuggled into the country.

"I don't have any reaction at this point," Kozak told reporters when asked about the US warnings. "We're checking this information.

"I believe that warnings about Sochi, about Russia were superfluous, and the threat levels in Sochi are just like they are in Boston or London.

"I would like to reiterate that security in Sochi will be no worse than in New York, London, Washington or Boston."

The opening ceremony of the Sochi Games will take place on Friday.
