London Welsh coach Lyn Jones claimed that the club must "hold its nerve" following their likely relegation from the Aviva Premiership.

A 31-14 defeat to Northampton Saints on Sunday means that the Exiles will finish the season at the bottom of the table.

However, they could be allowed to stay in the league if the winners of the Championship fail to meet the criteria needed to play in the top flight.

"You have got to take it one step at a time. It's the Championship for us. We've been there before, we understand the league," Jones told Sky Sports News.

"I have tried to make sure the players approach the game in as professional a manner as they possibly can and do their jobs. On the field, we've been competitive. What the club has to do is simply hold its nerve."

Welsh, who were handed a five-point deduction last month for fielding an ineligible player, travel to London Irish on Saturday.
