Warren Gatland has said that Gethin Jenkins's 'intelligence' played a part in his naming the prop as Wales captain.
Jenkins will take the armband in place of injured skipper Sam Warburton when Wales face Italy in the Six Nations on Saturday.
"It's an easy team to captain," Gatland said. "And I am not worried at all that it is our third captain in four games.
"Gethin is someone who doesn't talk a lot but tends to talk later in the week and for a front-row forward he is very intelligent and understands the game extremely well.
"He is really good for the coaches, particularly at half time, to get an opinion on attack and defence."
Wales are chasing the Grand Slam after wins over Ireland, Scotland and England.
