Andy Murray through to French Open quarter-finals

Andy Murray overcomes Fernando Verdasco in straight sets to reach the French Open quarter-finals.

Andy Murray has seen off Fernando Verdasco in straight sets to book his place in the French Open quarter-finals.

The Brit battled hard against his Spanish counterpart during an intense opening set before he came through it 6-4.

Both players gave little away in the second as they tussled for supremacy, but a break of the Verdasco serve late on allowed Murray to close it out 7-5 to seize control of the match.

The Wimbledon champion looked to be under little pressure in the third by opening up a 4-2 lead, only for Verdasco to fight back and level at 4-4 following a handful of wasted chances for Murray.

However, with the two players holding serve after that to force a tie-break, it was the seventh seed who eventually took it 7-3 to progress.

Murray will now meet Gael Monfils for a place in the semi-finals after the Frenchman's win over Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.
