Richard Gasquet has advanced to the third round of the Madrid Open after a 7-5 6-3 victory over Serbian Viktor Troicki.
It was Troicki who started the match the better, demonstrating his size and power around the court.
Gasquet saved an important break point at 3-3, however, and the match remained on serve until 6-5 Gasquet.
However, the Frenchman broke his opponent to secure the opening set 7-5 and move into a 1-0 lead.
The loss of the opening set clearly hurt Troicki and although he started the second well, Gasquet broke at 3-2, allowing him to remain on serve to claim the second set 6-3.
