The Russian Federation Olympics team has clinched its first gold medal of the Sochi Winter Olympics today by securing first place in the team figure skating event.
Evgeni Plushenko and Julia Lipnitskaia bagged the gold by winning the first two events, the men's and women's free skating runs respectively, establishing an insurmountable lead over their rivals in the process.
Although the USA secured first place in the final event, the ice dance, they finished third overall, earning themselves the bronze medal.
Meanwhile, Canada finished second and won the team figure skating silver medal.
