UK Sport's Simon Timson pleased with Sochi success

UK Sport director of performance Simon Timson claims that British athletes' success in Sochi could open up something bigger for winter sports in the country.

UK Sport director of performance Simon Timson has said that Team GB's success at the ongoing 2014 Sochi Games could "prove to be a real turning point" for winter sports' popularity in the country.

Great Britain have won three medals so far in the Russian city and are guaranteed one more when the men's curling team take on their Canadian counterparts in the final on Friday.

"In my 20-plus years of involvement in British winter sport, I have never seen an Olympic team better prepared, confident and with such high expectation of themselves than this one," BBC Sport quotes him as saying.

"British athletes, whether they be summer, winter, Olympic or Paralympic, have belief in their ability, and this Games could prove to be a real turning point for us as a winter sports nation."

UK Sport invested £14m to help prepare British athletes for the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.
