Chris Borland has revealed his intention to give a large portion of his signing bonus back to the San Francisco 49ers following his retirement from the NFL.
The 24-year-old called time on his career after just one season in the league due to his concerns of the long-term health effects of head trauma.
He told CBS: "I'm paying back three-fourths of my signing bonus. I'm only taking the money I've earned.
"To me it's just about health and nothing else. I never played the game for money or attention. I love football. I've had a blast. I don't regret the last 10 years of my life at all. I'd do it over the exact same way."
Borland recorded 108 tackles, one sack and two interceptions in his only NFL season.
