Denver Broncos wanted Doug Martin

The Denver Broncos say that they planned on drafting Doug Martin, but were beaten by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Denver Broncos have revealed that they had planned to pick Doug Martin in this year's NFL Draft.

The Broncos traded a first-round pick to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, thinking that the running-back would still be available, but the Bucs used the pick to secure Martin for themselves.

Denver coach John Fox told reporters: "He was very high on our board.

"He's a guy that I know our personnel people liked, our coaching staff liked. His success doesn't surprise me whatsoever."

The rookie is currently ranked fourth in rushing in the NFL, with over 1,000 yards already this season.

The Broncos face the Buccaneers in Denver this weekend.
