Commonwealth Games Federation chief: Durban 2022 a "very exciting prospect"

The chief executive of the Commonwealth Games Federation, David Grevemberg, describes the possibility of Durban hosting the 2022 Games as a "very exciting prospect".

David Grevemberg, chief executive of the Commonwealth Games Federation, has described the prospect of hosting the 2022 games in Africa as "very exciting".

Earlier today, Canadian city Edmonton withdrew its bid to host the Games because of financial reasons, leaving South Africa's Durban as the only remaining candidate.

Durban should be confirmed as the 2022 host, following Australia's Gold Coast Games in 2018, later this year.

Speaking about the possibility of Durban 2022, Grevemberg told BBC Sport: "In the world of sport this has been contemplated and discussed. A Games in Africa, for Africa - it's a very exciting prospect.

"As a sports enthusiast and as a person who has been watching the development of sport worldwide, I look forward to the coming months."

Edmonton's bidding team confirmed that they would apply again to host the 2026 Games.
