Matej Toth walks his way to historic gold for Slovakia

Matej Toth wins Slovakia's first ever gold at the World Athletics Championship by going all the way in the 50km walking event.

Matej Toth has won this morning's 50km walk for what was Slovakia's first ever gold medal in the discipline at the World Athletics Championships.

The 32-year-old - a European silver medallist last year - clocked a winning time of 3:40.32 to record a milestone achievement for his country in Beijing.

Two-time Olympic silver medallist Jared Tallent of Australia took the silver, having finished a minute behind Toth, while Japan's Takayuki Tanii claimed bronze.

Defending champion at the Worlds Robert Heffernan missed out on a podium finish in the defence of his title as the Irishman ended up fifth.
